Today I woke up and my first thought was, “I am going to approach today.”
Every time I emerge from the subway where I like to game there is a rush of excitement. It’s game time baby! (Even though I should always be “on”)
Today’s Stats:
10 Approaches
3 Numbers
3 Blowouts
Approach 1: I saw her coming out of a shop. Looked latina. Glasses. Cute. “I just wanted to say hi” I said. She kept moving. I continued with “I like your glasses.” Her facial expression told me she wasn’t interested. To confirm, I followed up with “Oh, you don’t want to talk to me?” I received a firm “No.”
Approach 2: I saw her just before the crosswalk. Big, puffy, curly hair, nice brown skin, petite. I made a big gesture with my hands to compliment her big, puffy, curly hair. “Look at that hair!! Over there lookin like you have built-in ear muffs on!.” She stopped and hooked immediately. I can’t remember what we talked about, but I stayed in set for a while and we actually had a conversation. When she told me where she was from, it was a wrap. Her family is from the same state in Mexico as another girl I used to see, an ex I suppose, Midwest. I teased her, saying “Oooh, you’re from X state? I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I know about X state girls. Then I had her guess where I was from. Gave her a hug before we parted ways. She’s my type. I might’ve been her type too, why the interaction went so well. I think this was my best set today.
Approach 3: Blonde with curly hair blowing through the wind. Green eyes. She looked like she was on a mission, but I was feeling high from the last approach. Tried the hair thing again. No hand gestures this time. Her name was actually the same as the last approach. Dumbfounded by this fact for whatever silly reason, I started stuttering. I could not get any words out. She wouldn’t stop, so I walked with her. Told her I saw her and I wanted to get to know her, and I could see her facial expression change. She hit me with the boyfriend objection. Lost for words, I let her go. I think I was too gamey from being excited about the last approach.
Approach 4: Korean chick. Stopped for a second. She told me she was going to get food. Again, I could see the point where her facial expression changed, and I guess she’s wondering why she talking to this rando and keeps walking. “Oh you don’t want to talk to me!” I let her go.
Then I met up with Kvothe. This is my second time winging with Kvothe. I’ll be honest, I prefer to game alone, but gaming with this guy is fun. We’ll be chatting and then all of a sudden I see him disappear into the crowd. He moves through the crowd like he’s flowing down a river looking for his next catch. He moves like a hunter seeking his prey. And then you know when he pounces because his stops are epic. He looks out for me, and I look out for him. On this occasion he spotted a cutie that had eyes for me. I almost hesitated because she was too far, and then I ran after her.
“Ay, girl with the curly hair!! Come here!!” j/k
Approach 5: She looked mixed with curly long hair. “Hey, I saw you back there and wanted to say hi…” We started talking. She asked where I saw her. “I dunno. I saw you looking at me, so I had to say something.” “I’m glad you did” she replied. We exchanged numbers and asked where she was from. Our conversation was short, but she seemed really into it, especially with the comment she made.
Approach 6: Cute, petite redhead. Super simple looking. I messed this one up because she told me she just got out of work, and then I continued to talk about work. I don’t like talking about work, and I think it makes me look like I’m seeking validation. She couldn’t tell I was trying to flirt with her, and she ended up giving me the boyfriend objection after we had been talking for a few minutes. I told her, “You let me talk to you for this long, and now you tell me you have a boyfriend? I was all nervous and stuff and you’re just now telling me this.” “Yea, I thought we were just chatting.” I let her go. Clearly I wasn’t polarizing enough.
Approach 7: Light-skinned. Latina or mixed. NYer. Curly hair. I let her walk three steps away from me and then went after her. “What are you listening to?” “Afrobeats” she replied. “Ok. That’s wassup.” This time, I decided to announce why I was talking to her. “Look, you’re probably wondering why this guy is talking to you…” She nodded. We both asked for each other’s name at the same time. Got a few more details, then exchanged numbers. Then I excused myself. “I don’t want to take too much of your time, I know you have a long train ride home.”
Approach 8: She was foine. Small features, pointy nose. Black hair with brown highlights. Glowing brown skin. Petite. I had to walk fast to catch up to her. I waved. Before I could say anything, she took out her earphone and said hi.
“What you listenin to?”
“Gunna.”
“Who’s that?”
“Boy, bye.” she swerved so hard on me.
“Oh it’s like that!!” I shouted into the abyss of the city noise.
I left that interaction cracking up. I clearly don’t listen to rap music anymore. She clearly f**ks BBC thugs.
I was waiting for Kvothe to do an approach when I saw this one.
Approach 9: I let it linger for a bit, then I said, “F-it. Let’s go.” Cute. Long, straight hair. Lots of make up though, once I got closer. I waved. She took out her earphone. We took a few steps then stopped. She was meeting friends for dinner. Tried to figure out what kind of food she was into. I extended the invitation for a coffee/drink to get to know her better and she hit me with, “I’m from out of town.”
Kvothe left. I thought I had a few more in me. Turns out I had one.
Approach 10: Two-set. Asian chick and a white chick with some white frames. As a frames man myself, I went for the one with frames. She was eating it up, and the friend even stepped away a little. Before I could finish my sentence to invite frames girl, her friend interrupted with, “She has a boyfriend.” And I replied jovially, “You don’t even know what I’m about to say!” I let them go.

I could never get into Patrick Rothfuss, http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/reviews/the-name-of-the-wind-by-patrick-rothfuss-and-the-children-of-hurin-by-j-r-r-tolkien/
Kvothe is a cool name, though...
